December 2011
We hope you had a truly grateful Thanksgiving Day, filled with good times & surrounded by loved ones!!!  Life is difficult for many in these times ... even in the hardest of times, we can find much to be thankful for!!!  Might take some searching, but it's there!!  ;o)  Our friend Linda Aanestad brought us some of her yummy dinner & pumpkin pie - it was GREAT!!!  We were preparing for our Rummage Sale the next day, so couldn't break away to join them at their home.  THANK YOU, LINDA!!

We are so excited to share that Spirit went to a great home in Pennsylvania!!!  There, she will be the recipient of ALL the love any dog could hope for!!!  Poor Spirit - we took her as a pup from the Colorado Springs shelter in 2006.
She spent 4+ years in a home, then was returned for not getting along with the lab they adopted AFTER Spirit.  Spirit did NOT like her & they got into a fight.  When Spirit was brought back she was about 20# under weight - she had developed a 'cowlick' on her hip from being crated & she herself had wounds & scars, including 'happy tail'.  We got her all pretty again but sadly, her tail needed to be clipped.  She's a loving, sweet girl who only wants to love & be loved. Hugs & many thanks to Tim & Sandi, because with them, she'll have that & more!!!  They will have had the opportunity to 'bond' during the drive from Colorado to her new home in Pennsylvania.  I received this note today:

"Hi Toni,    just a note to let you know that we all made it home ok on monday evening about 9pm. spirit was wonderful in the car looking around and then sleeping. we got her out at every stop and walked her and she was the perfect lady in the two motels we stayed at. what a wonderful gift you have given us, and we will treasure you for ever for spirit. she is asleep right now on our couch and really seems to have made herself at home with us here in pa.  she will be loved and taken care of for the rest of her life.  god bless you and good luck with your move to texas.  please keep us updated.   as ever, Tim & Sandi."

This made my eyes leak ...

We still have some great dogs who are awaiting new homes!!!  Some of these need special situations without other animals, but ALL are delightful with people!!!  Please check out our Petfinder page at

After much soul searching, weighing things out, we have decided to move ourselves & Mariah's Promise to Texas after mid-January 2012. I go back to court on December 13th for yet another citation for barking dogs in Guffey, which will include a future court date.  Sigh.

We chose the San Antonio area for many reasons - mostly because Mike's family is there.  We will both have more employment opportunities ... plus Temper Young music has been VERY well received in Texas.  We are looking for a place where we can once again rescue & help dogs & people.  We intend to educate, utilizing and sharing our experience here.  We hope to assist in low cost spay/neuter, advocate vs. heavy 'hands on' rescue.  We want to fill a niche like we did here in Colorado - animals abandoned at vet's, assist owner release dogs, animals in domestic violence situations, owners who have passed away.  We did all that in tandem with assisting the ban area dogs.  Now it's time for a win-win with the dogs and our personal lives.  We're only on this earth for a short time ... we miss our family & friends in Texas & we love the dogs!!

We are hoping to find homes for a few more dogs, to ease the move.  It will be a complex & layered move ... moving household items AND the kennels, igloos, etc. approximately 1100 miles!!  It will also be expensive, but worth it!!

Once we have vacated the Woodland Park house, it will go on the market.  When it closes, we will recoup the down payment & be in a position to hopefully purchase a place.  In the meantime, we will rent.  At least we'll be in the area & can look for 'the' place.  Found one that would be ideal, but the seller has not decided if they will do a lease/option.  Does anyone have or know of a place that doesn't have restrictions between Austin & San Antonio??  (Just thought I'd ask ...)

Mariah's Promise has afforded MANY dogs a chance at a new life that was NOT available to them where they lived.  We are grateful & proud of that!!  We don't boast about all we've done (been too busy just doin' it) -> the FIVE HUNDRED 'pit bull' dogs (from 21 states) PLUS the other breeds we have taken in.  We remain an ALL BREED RESCUE because we don't want to 'draw a line' between the bully breeds & other breeds of dogs.  We love them ALL & they all deserve a fresh start in life!!

Walk into our front room ... you'll be greeted by Dakota (Shep-x), Simba (Golden/Mastiff-x), Sheila (Heeler-x whose 'dad' died & she was rejected by another rescue group).  Then comes Porsche, Star & Sugar, with Lollie hiding ... the bully breeds.  Porsche will beat you with her tail & squish you to sit on your lap ... ALL are loved & cherished!!

Mariah's Promise has been blessed & gifted with so many caring people, we can NEVER thank you enough - except to keep our commitment to the dogs in our care, to love them & care for them as our own & find them loving homes, such as Spirit has found!!  We may not be 'pretty' or fancy, but we have chosen to be effective in helping save MANY lives over the years.  We hope to continue our hearts desire & the will of God, as we believe it to be, to help animals that cross our path.

Our dear Paula (who allows us to keep dogs on her property in Guffey) has spent much of 2011 with her mom in California after Barbara had a freak incident in May with a driver running over her FEET in the trailer park where she resides.  Please keep Barbara & Paula, plus Barbara's caregiver, Rick, & Paula's sister, Linda, in your prayers.  Paula is there now to spend Christmas, New Years & her mom's early January birthday ... Paula plans to return mid-January.

I want to share this with you, because I keep it in front of my computer & read it often:
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life.

"A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.  '
It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.
One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt,
resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness,
benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and
then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
2011 has been QUITE the year!!!  I had to re-write this newsletter because I was 'feeding' the negativity we have been engulfed in the past six years.  Although we are leaving Colorado, we will assist Colorado dogs as we can.  We need to get US settled in, let the dogs adjust to the change & acclimate from 8500+ elevation to sea level, find employment & 'decompress' first before we can help others.  Never doubt that we love the dogs!!  We have been standing between them & DEATH!!  That won't change & we will continue!!!
We believe Jesus is the Reason for the season, so I wanted to share this with you.

This truly touched our hearts.  Be blessed!!

From the bottom of our hearts, we wish you all a
and multi-fold blessings in the New Year.
As always, we appreciate your donations & prayers!!!!

God Bless You and Thanks so much!!!

Mike, Toni & Paula & the dogs in our care!
